FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Are Life Jackets Required?

Although Michigan state law requires that anyone 6 years of age and younger wear a life jacket, Heavner Canoe Rental requires that anyone in any of our watercraft wear a life jacket. This includes canoes, kayaks, paddle boats and fishing boats. We offer water options that include lake conditions with varying water depth. Your safety is our first concern.

Life jackets are included in the rental of any watercraft at both our locations.

What if I own a canoe or Kayak?

Both locations are public launch sites. We provide livery service at reasonable rates and will even make arrangements to "spot" vehicles for private canoe/Kayak owners.

Is Alcohol Use Allowed?

Heavner Canoe Rental policy strictly prohibits the use of alcohol while canoeing, kayaking, or in paddle boats and fishing boats.

What skill is required?

Under most conditions the Huron River is a smooth, gentle flowing river. Under these conditions, it is a perfect place for beginners. We encourage beginners to start at the Proud Lake location. Island Lake offers more of a "wilderness" setting that could include obstacles requiring more skill.

What happens in bad weather?

Usually it is left up to the group involved whether to go out or re-schedule. We do offer Rain-checks for reservations made in advance. We do however, reserve the right restrict trips in case of storms or unsafe water conditions.

Are pets allowed on the river?

There are no rules against bringing pets, however we do discourage it. It can be quite difficult to control a dog in the canoe, thus making it easier to tip.
